Title: Inside the Social Process – the system audit

Developing self and others is a professional profile within AITSL (Australian institute for teaching and school leadership.) The practice description provides a standard to focus principal leadership driving how they support others to build capacity and treat people fairly and with respect. They model effective leadership and are committed to their own ongoing professional development and personal health and wellbeing in order to manage the complexity of the role.

Systems Leadership defines the social domain as the construct of the ability to interact with others at work to produce a productive outcome. How we interact with ourselves predicts how we interact with the world. Disconnection from self, fosters poor body awareness and reduces our ability to understand and empathise with the emotions of others. Engaging in mindfulness and systematic breathing enhances the prefrontal cortex’s activity responsible for higher order cognitive functions such as decision making and concentration. Mindful breathing influences brain regions associated with emotional processing. Consistent mindful breathing practices support structural changes associated with improved emotional regulation. Safe, calm and connected neurobiological states are a prerequisite for accessing the higher brain structures that enable us to be creative and generative.

The relationships within our internal organisation form the bedrock of our behaviour towards the world and underpin our agency to effect meaningful change.

The nervous system is one of three divisions of the autonomic nervous system the others being the sympathetic nervous system and the enteric nervous system. All systems that drive the effectiveness of the body, mind and spirit.

This workshop will allow delegates to explore how the sympathetic nervous system drives clarity of purpose from within. Participants will experience how the breath and the connection with the diaphragm, chest and collar bones can regulate the whole body and still the mind feeling a sense of greater clarity and mindfulness. Slowing down the heart rate to reduce the fight or flight response decreases blood pressure therefore conserving energy and relaxing muscles. Activation of this system helps the body recover and maintain equilibrium after stress or physical activity.

The workshop/presentation will allow delegates to perform a system audit on themselves. How do our highly effective leaders tap into the internal social process and use this system as it was intended? The relationship we have with ourselves predicts our relationship with the world. Learn how to turn down the noise and focus within bringing the ability to quieten the self-chatter. When we clear the mind, we allow space for creativity. Returning presence to our leaders allows them to make an even bigger contribution by preserving their longevity and health.
